GORDON WELCOMES FUNDING FOR NEW SCHOOLS
Gordon Marsden has welcomed the news that Highfield Humanities College and St. Mary’s Catholic College has had their refurbishment funds secured.
Government cuts to the Building Schools for the Future Fund put the proposed funding under threat last month with the announcement that the refurbishment plans would be halted. However, the Government has revealed that £23.3M will be allocated to Highfield Humanities College in order to re-build the centre of the school site and improve sports areas that will be open to the community and St. Mary’s have had £22.5M secured.
Gordon lead the campaign to keep the school funding in place, recently taking 600 letters from Highfield College personally to the Education Secretary Michael Gove urging him to allow their BSF bid to go ahead.
Speaking after the announcement Gordon said, “It is a triumph for the schools and I am very pleased these schools have been given the go-ahead after my visit to Highfield School and my lobbying of the Education Secretary. It would have been a travesty if the schemes had not gone ahead, especially with the problems visible to the schools in Blackpool.”
“Although this is fantastic news for the schools saved we must not forget the schools who have missed out on this Government funding and the schools in Blackpool that are still in need of refurbishment which I will continue to lobby for in Parliament.”
