Gordon Warns Post Offices May Close

Blackpool South MP Gordon Marsden joined members of the CWU and activists at a stall on Whitegate Drive on Friday campaigning against the privatisation of the postal service, which could lead to Post Offices closing across the town.

The Tory led Government is in the process of their plans to privatise the Royal Mail with the Bill currently going through the House of Lords on privatisation.

Gordon Said, “The Government has refused to guarantee the business agreement between the Royal Mail and the Post Office in any privatisation deal. People I spoke to were concerned about the danger of there being nowhere locally to withdraw their pensions or benefits now that the Government has axed the contract for this with the Post Office. Both of these things mean Sub-Post Offices across Blackpool could close due to the Government’s refusal to give a minimum number of guaranteed outlets. This will lead to severe job losses along with a dismantling of Post Office services with people in Blackpool being left without access to their pensions and postal services.”

“The Royal Mail is a universal six day a week-one price goes anywhere service and if it is privatised there will be no cast iron guarantee that if it is sold off to a private buyer –possibly an overseas one – of that level of service being maintained. I intend to keep lobbying here in Blackpool and in Westminster as well as supporting the Communication Workers Union in trying to keep the Royal Mail in public ownership.”
