Gordon Speaks Out Against Station Closure Plans

Gordon has added his voice to the growing concerns over the future of Blackpool South station after it was announced last week the Council were considering plans that would see the station closed and moved several hundred yards down the line.

'At a time when everyone including the government is trying to encourage greater public transport use and integration in town centre areas it is bizarre to have proposals which would do exactly the opposite. Blackpool South station, incidentially a historic entry point to the town in its own right, could and should play a key role in regenerating South Shore as we try to have more quality housing there and the government is giving backing to initiatives to support local businesses and tourism.'

'To close it, or shoehorn it into a tiny triangle of land off Lytham Road would undermine the work currently being done. The Pleasure Beach stop does indeed need more highlighting and promotion, but as well as not instead of Blackpool South. I will be writing to Network Rail and to the Department of Transport to point all this out. I hope widespread public concern will lead to a rapid rethink of what is an uncoordinated and decidedly non-green proposal.'
