Gordon praises Air Training Corps

Blackpool South MP Gordon Marsden has praised the role of the town’s Air Training Corps in supporting the local community and giving Blackpool young people opportunities on a visit to the ATC’s 177 Squadron at Blackpool Airport at Squires Gate.

Mr Marsden, who was invited to speak to the cadets about his life as Blackpool South’s MP, answered questions from ATC members and was than shown round the Squires Gate site by the officer commanding 177 Squadron, Flight Lieutenant Andrew Nickson. ‘I was really impressed – not just by the commitment and enthusiasm of the ATC cadets but by the initiative and dedication of Andrew Nickson and his adult helpers – which gives cadets the opportunity to do everything from flight simulation on BAE kit to listening in on international air traffic,’ Mr Marsden said.

Mr Marsden is backing the Squadron’s bid to be officially adopted by the town by Blackpool Borough Council – ‘not only does the Squadron have a proud history in the own for over 60 years but they play an active part in civic activities – from cadets raising money St Dunstans on charity runs to providing a guard of honour for the Duchess of Cornwall at Blackpool Airport on National Veterans Day’.

Mr Marsden, who has recently been elected chairman of Parliament’s new All-Party Group for Veterans added – ‘the contribution I saw Andrew Nickson and his Squadron give from the Stanley Park get together for Veterans to the Badge ceremonies in the Tower Ballroom on the Day – for which they were publicly thanked by the Veterans Minister – underlines how the Air Force provides a really good opportunity for young people in Blackpool both to serve the community and celebrate our local aviation heritage. They provide the generational link which is vital as we campaign to increase public awareness and Government support for veterans of all ages.’
