Gordon Meets Stars At Woodlands
Gordon joined students and organisers on a visit to this summers Stars scheme for disabled young people which is being held at Woodlands School.
Stars – which stands for Socialisation through Active Recreation is a play scheme – providing respite support through summer activities for disabled young people. The administration of Stars has now been taken on by Blackpool FC Community Trust for the entire summer.
Gordon said after joining the event, “I arrived just as the young people were watching some breakdancing which was put on for their entertainment. Providing this type of atmosphere helps not only the young people enjoy their time at these events, but also allows their parents to relax knowing that their children are being well looked after and enjoying themselves over the summer break.”
“I was glad to meet with Debra Smith, who has done a fantastic job in organising the Stars scheme, to discuss the potential future funding. I was told that the scheme currently has 56 children registered with an average of 35 children attending per day supported by 29 members of staff.”
“It is great to see schemes such as stars run with such success and work so well with Blackpool FC Community Trust which does so much good work in and around Blackpool.”
“The Stars scheme is on for the whole of August but we need to have some clarification about other activities traditionally put on in October and at other times in the year. I have recently met with David Lund Executive Director Children’s Services at Blackpool Council and discussed possible funding from other routes. I know also Blackpool FC Community Trust will be looking into other possibilities of funding for the scheme.”
