Gordon Marks Holocaust Memorial Day
Gordon has marked Holocaust Memorial Day by sponsoring the House of Commons remembrance book and signing it with other MPs from all parties.
Gordon, who at the end of last year went on a special day-long visit to the extermination camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau with students from Blackpool and all over the North-West, paid his respects by the book installation which the Holocaust Educational Trust has had in the corridor of the Commons for this year’s Memorial Day. Speaking afterwards Gordon said
‘Signing the memorial book and adding comments had a special poignancy after having been to the place where 1.2 million people were put to death by the Nazis. I am proud that we in Blackpool play our part in that remembrance of the Holocaust – from the students who went with me on the Auschwitz visit to those who take part this year, as in previous ones, in the ceremonies in Blackpool Town Hall.’
‘In sponsoring the book and signing it, I have re-emphasised that it’s about remembering the past to protect the future. Jewish people, Poles, Roma, gay, disabled people and other minorities – all were victims of the bigotry and hatred that the Nazis gradually poisoned their society with. As Rwanda, the Balkans and other areas of atrocities have shown since the Second World War, we are not immune from that process being repeated. That’s why we remember – and that’s why the Holocaust’s lessons must be communicated to younger generations via the initiatives of the Educational Trust. At a time about the BNP and their Holocaust-denial in our own country, there could not be a more important thing to do.'
