Gordon Calls for Weekend Voting
Gordon Marsden MP is today calling on the government to consider holding future general
elections on Saturdays and Sundays to help boost voter turnout.
Mr Marsden commented
“General elections have taken place on Thursdays since 1935 - but I think now’s the
time to take a serious look at this outdated convention.”
“Giving people
the chance to vote over the weekend will help them fit it into their working life. This is a
very sensible step that we could take to get more people to the polls and involved in the
political process.”
Mr Marsden will be raising the issue in Parliament today
(at 15.15) as he has the first Oral Question to the Speaker’s Committee on the Electoral
Commission.
