Gordon Backs Parliamentary Autism Initiatives

Blackpool South MP Gordon Marsden has backed the parliamentary Early Day Motion 1773, on young people with Autism. The motion noted with concern the findings of a recent publication of the All-Party parliamentary group on Autism on the transition from child to adult services for young people with autism, noting that transition services are still failing most young people with autism. The motion also called on the government to implement the report’s recommendations to improve outcomes for this vulnerable group.

Mr Marsden has been a long standing campaigner for improved rights for those with autism; he was one of the MP’s that signed the Autism Bill that was passed at the start of this year. The Bill looked to address the barriers that exclude people with autism from accessing services and support, by measures such as strengthening the information about the number of people with autism and their needs, in order to improve local planning of services.

In addition to this, Mr Marsden has also previously tabled two amendments to the Education and Skills Bill

Mr Marsden, commented: “I feel it is vital we continue to do all we can to improve the transition for those with autism from child to adult services.”

“This is an issue I have campaigned upon for many years and I hope we can look to implement the reports findings to improve transition services for young people with autism.”
