Gordon Backs Equal Pay For Young Workers

Gordon has joined the campaign to extend the full National Minimum Wage to 18-21 year olds

The campaign which is being supported nationally by shop workers was launched with an on-street petition signing with a street stall held on Highfield Road and will be expanded with further activities in the New Year working with local community and trade union groups including Usdaw.

Speaking afterward Gordon said, ‘We had a very positive response from local residents about extending the full National Minimum Wage to the 18-21 age groups. I’ve backed the Minimum Wage for nearly 20 years and it was good to be able to listen to people’s views on how the National Minimum Wage has changed their lives. Extending the full rate to 18-21 year olds will be a big step towards stamping out ageism in the work place.'

Update January 2010:

The campaign has continued with a street stall in the Houndshill Centre which once again saw a very positive response from local residents that spoke to Gordon that morning.
