Gordon's Local Heroes 2010

Gordon has once again paid tribute to Blackpool's unsung stars with his third annual 'Local Heroes' awards.

Winner Wendy Bratby and 4 other nominees (Myra Lockyer, Paulette Short, Sylvia Roberts and Janine Wilkinson) were honoured at the Town Hall ceremony hosted by the Mayor, Councillor Norman Hardy who presented the awards sponsored by Tesco.

Gwen King, Wendy’s nominator and Chair of Queen’s Park Residents’ Association, said: 'Wendy runs our Community Cafe and free soup "give-away".  She makes all the soup herself and on her day off she prepares all the dishes for the community cafe; so she really works almost full-time as a volunteer.  Wendy will also happily make up "takeaway" meals for the disabled and housebound if they can't get to the cafe. The food she prepares is always freshly cooked and healthy…. Wendy is an absolute treasure and works tirelessly for the association without complaint.'

Gordon said: “It’s extremely important to recognise all the unsung heroes in Blackpool. The awards underline the fact we have here a very caring community who never ask for any reward and I for one am proud to represent them in Parliament.'
