Gordon's 'Big Swim' For Local Charities

Gordon has announced he is to take part in a sponsored ‘Big Swim’ on Friday 26th March to raise money for the Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre Blind Society in their centenary year and also for the Royal British Legion in Blackpool to start the ball rolling for their 2010 Poppython.

Commenting on his upcoming swim, Gordon said:  ‘These are two Blackpool-based charities and initiatives that are close to my heart – both of whose work I’ve highlighted in Parliament in the past – and for whom fundraising this year is very timely and important.  Blackpool Fylde and Wyre Blind Society are celebrating 100 years of service to the community this year with their new profile – ‘Nvision’ (North West) and do a tremendous job of service via their activities.

The Royal British Legion in Blackpool’s contribution to raising money for the annual appeal is legendary.  They’ve raised over £100,000 in the past 2- years via their Poppython at which I’ve been a frequent attender. As Chair of Parliament’s Veterans Group I know given the honoured and national profile Blackpool has in veterans and armed forces events, these could not be a better charity to support at the present time.

All donations are extremely welcome, I’m very happy to have the opportunity to raise money for these two excellent causes, however tired I may feel afterwards!’

Ian Coleman, head of the Royal British Legion in Blackpool said, ‘We’re delighted that Gordon has agreed to do a sponsored swim to raise money for both us and the Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre Blind Society, he has always been supportive of us in the past and has highlighted our Poppython and other fundraising events to his Parliamentary colleagues at Westminster.’

Kevin Winkley from the Blackpool Fylde and Wyre Blind Society agreed, and added ‘This swimathon will be an excellent opportunity to raise funds for the society in our centenary year and we’re very grateful to Gordon for organising this event.’
