Blackpool on the Front Bench
Gordon has been promoted to the Labour front bench in the House of Commons, taking up a challenging role in the shadow ministerial team for Communities and Local Government.
It builds on his work before the election with Cabinet Minister John Denham on community cohesion and links with faith communities and in particular on the initiatives the Labour Government announced on revitalising Blackpool and other seaside towns.
“I will use my week-by-week contacts with the community groups in Blackpool to feed that holding of the new Government to account on how they are going to continue support for smaller towns – coastal and otherwise – like Blackpool. I also want us to develop new ideas about how we can empower communities – including local voluntary groups, national charities and others – as well as safeguarding the achievements of the previous Government in supporting key local services and job initiatives in Blackpool and elsewhere.”
Gordon will join the rest of Labour’s team on the Front Bench this Thursday as the new Government’s ministers face their first Question Time in the Commons on Local Government and Community issues.
