Blackpool MP Supports Differential Duty In Pubs
BLACKPOOL MP CALLS FOR PUBS TO BE SAFEGUARDED BY DIFFERENTIAL DUTY
In a week in which there are continuing concerns about the rate of pub closures, Blackpool South MP Gordon Marsden has come out strongly in favour of the campaign for differential duty rates to be introduced for draught beer compared to canned or bottled beers. Mr Marsden is backing Commons motion calling for the government to consider introducing differential duty rates for draught beers in comparison to those that are pre-packaged.
“I’m a great supporter of Blackpool’s traditional pubs and I feel that in the current climate, we should be doing everything we can to support them. We are fortunate enough in Blackpool to be blessed with a great variety of pubs and I hope that can continue long into the future.” Mr Marsden stated.
“Introducing different rates of duty for draught versus pre-packaged beer could allow us to give Blackpool’s pubs and clubs a vital shot in the arm during this period of economic uncertainty. As recent news has shown us, this is exactly the time we need to be supporting traditional pubs given the ever growing competition of supermarkets which can offer substantial discounts on pre-packaged beer.”
Mr Marsden has been a long standing supporter of such a move, having signed previous Commons motions calling on the Chancellor to introduce a different rate of duty for draught beers as opposed to those in cans or bottles.
